PGT Sliding & Patio Doors: The Miami Owner’s Guide
We stock and install replacement parts for PGT sliding and patio doors throughout Miami, with most roller, track, and lock replacements running $180 to $480 installed depending on the part and your door’s series. The usual discovery is simple: the door starts dragging, the handle goes loose, or the lock stops catching. You live with it for a month, then a humid afternoon makes it stick completely and now it’s a problem.
Most PGT sliding door failures in Miami come down to three things: salt air eating the rollers, humidity swelling the frame enough to throw off alignment, or years of sand and grit grinding the track down. We see it in Kendall, Brickell, Coconut Grove, and every neighborhood between. Owen Satterfield has been doing this work in Miami long enough to know which parts fail on which PGT series before he even opens the door.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT builds sliding and patio doors across several series, and the part you need depends on which one you have. The main lines we service are the 950 Series (aluminum frame, common in older Miami condos and townhomes), the 770 Series (vinyl, popular in single-family homes), and the newer WinGuard and PremierVue lines, which are impact-rated and built to Miami-Dade wind load standards.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: PGT rollers are not universal. A 950 Series roller won’t seat correctly in a 770 Series door, and forcing it in is how you get a door that jumps the track six months later. We identify the right part two ways: the PGT label etched into the glass corner or door frame edge, and the roller wheel diameter and bracket height measured in place. Aftermarket equivalents exist for PGT rollers and handles, and the quality varies wildly. We’ve installed both. For impact-rated doors, we recommend OEM PGT parts. For standard non-impact doors, a quality aftermarket roller like Prime-Line or Acme often matches or beats the original for less money. We’ll tell you which makes sense for your door, not just which makes us a bigger sale.
Quick note: Westlight Windows Miami is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with PGT, but we’ve installed their doors for years and we know the parts catalog cold.
Signs Your PGT Sliding Door Is Failing
- Door drags or needs a shoulder to move. The rollers are worn flat or the bearings are seized. On PGT doors, this is almost always the bottom rollers; when they go, the door weight sits on the track and grinds the aluminum down.
- Door jumps the track or tilts inward when you slide it. One roller has failed or the adjustment screw has backed out. Left alone, the door can fall out of the frame entirely. For a glass panel that can weigh 150 pounds, that’s a safety issue, not just an annoyance.
- Lock won’t latch or the handle flops loose. The mortise lock or the latch hook has worn down, or the handle set screws have stripped. On PGT 950 Series doors, the lock housing is riveted in place and corrodes from inside where you can’t see it.
- Air or water seeps in around the door edges. The weatherstripping has compressed or the thermoplastic wool pile in the frame has disintegrated. Miami’s humidity and afternoon storms will find every gap.
- Track looks dented or the door scrapes a metal-on-metal sound. The track is worn through or has been gouged by a broken roller. Sometimes we can install a track cap; sometimes the track section needs replacing. We’ll know once we look.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge in Miami for the most common PGT sliding and patio door repairs, installed:
- Roller replacement (pair): $180 to $320, depending on series and whether we’re using OEM PGT rollers or a quality aftermarket equivalent.
- Track cap or track patch: $140 to $260, for a worn or gouged track section that doesn’t need full replacement.
- Handle and lock replacement: $160 to $340, includes the full handle set, mortise lock, and latch adjustment.
- Weatherstripping and wool pile replacement: $90 to $220, materials and labor for all four edges.
- Full door alignment and tune-up: $150 to $280, includes roller cleaning and lubrication, track cleaning, lock adjustment, and frame inspection.
What drives the range is mostly your PGT series. WinGuard and PremierVue parts cost more than 950 or 770 Series parts because they’re built to impact standards and the components are heavier. The other factor is condition: if corrosion has eaten into the door frame, we may need to address that before swapping parts. Every price we give is a written price before any work starts. No revised invoices at the door, no surprises. And if the repair fails within our guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Way: the price in writing first, the arrival window you can hold us to, the site left cleaner than we found it, and the guarantee on paper.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check a few things yourself without risk. Open the door and look at the track: if it’s full of sand and grit, vacuum it out and wipe it with a dry cloth. Lubricate the track with a dry silicone spray, never WD-40, which attracts dirt in Miami humidity and makes things worse. Check the adjustment screws at the bottom of the door panel: they’re usually covered by snap caps, and if they’ve backed out, the door sags.
Here’s where DIY goes wrong: removing a sliding door panel is a two-person job. A PGT WinGuard panel can weigh 180 to 220 pounds, and lowering it out of the frame without dropping it takes experience and the right lift. If the door falls, you’re looking at shattered impact glass, a damaged frame, and a much bigger bill. The roller swap itself requires the door out and laid flat. This is not a YouTube fix on a Saturday afternoon. If you’ve got a dragging, grinding, or sticking PGT door, call us at (850) 753-2730. Owen will tell you straight what it’ll take to fix it.
FAQs
Most PGT sliding door rollers last 8 to 12 years in Miami’s salt air and humidity, though doors on the water in areas like Key Biscayne or Coconut Grove often need rollers replaced in 5 to 7 years. Impact-rated WinGuard doors wear faster because the panels are heavier. If your door is dragging, the rollers are already done. Call (850) 753-2730 and we’ll replace them before the track gets damaged.
No, PGT rollers are sealed units, and when the bearing goes or the wheel wears flat, you replace the roller assembly, not repair it. Sometimes a roller just needs cleaning and adjustment, which we can do in about 30 minutes. But a seized or flat-spotted wheel gets replaced. Call us at (850) 753-2730 and we’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with.
Most PGT roller, handle, and lock replacements take 60 to 90 minutes from start to finish, including track cleanup and door re-alignment. We carry the most common PGT rollers, handles, and track caps on the truck, so we can usually do the job in one visit. For less common WinGuard parts, we may need to order from PGT, which adds a few days. Either way, you’ll know before we start.
We stock the most common PGT sliding and patio door parts on our service trucks: 950 and 770 Series rollers, standard handles and locks, weatherstripping, and track caps. For impact-rated WinGuard or PremierVue parts, we order directly from PGT or a certified PGT distributor, and the parts arrive within a few days in Miami. We also carry compatible parts for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows sliding doors if that’s what you have. Call (850) 753-2730 with your door’s model number and we’ll check stock right then.
If your PGT sliding or patio door is giving you trouble, tell us what you’re dealing with. We’ll give you a written price before any work starts, show up in the window we gave you, and stand behind the repair. Call (850) 753-2730 to schedule your free estimate.
